Woman missing after being hit by Wave

 Tuesday, January 27, 2009
A woman is missing after being swept to sea while collecting shellfish with her husband yesterday (26 January).

The couple, of Chinese origin and residents of Yaiza, were collecting shellfish together in the area known as "zoco de Inés" - on the wild west coast of the Island, some 3km north of the Faro de Pechiguera lighthouse (Playa Blanca). The 36 year-old woman was hit by a large wave at around 18:30 and her husband dived into the water in an attempt to assist her. In doing so, the Man got into difficulty himself in the large swell. A local threw a life ring to the stricken man who was eventually rescued some two hours later and transferred to the Hospital José Molina Orosa showing signs of hypothermia.

The search for the missing woman was suspended during the early hours of Tuesday Morning and was re-started at first light.

Update
The body of the missing woman was eventually found some 5 nautical miles off the coast of Fuerteventura on Thursday (29 Januray) following an extensive air search.
