EU funds to be recovered from Princesa Yaiza
Monday, January 19, 2009
 |
The EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Danuta Hübner, confirmed last week (15 January) that Spain has begun proceedings to recover more than 4 million euros of EU funding that was granted to the Hotel Princes Yaiza in Playa Blanca.
The TSJC (Canarian High Court) annulled the original license granted by Yaiza's council to build the hotel in March of last year. Following that decision, the issue was raised in the European Parliament by David Hammerstein of the Green Party and an investigation begun.
The Princesa Yaiza received 20% of its 16.4 million Euro construction cost in European Aid, but failed to comply with local planning norms and exceeded the dimensions that were granted by Yaiza's Ayuntamiento.
